Planning a Pregnancy?

Woodlands' Partner Dr Natasha Pomery says - It’s never too early to start folic acid – it is currently recommended that women are taking daily folic acid from 3 months prior to conception and throughout the 1st trimester (1st 3 months) where possible.

If you are a smoker we strongly urge you to quit smoking prior to pregnancy – please see the nurse or health care assistant who would be delighted to support you.

Certain medications (bought ‘over-the-counter’ or prescribed by us) can be harmful in early pregnancy and others are relatively safe - if you are using any regular medicationyou may wish to take GP advice prior to conception.

Discovered you are pregnant?

Current guidelines recommend women take daily folic acid for the 1st trimester (1st 3months) and daily vitamin D supplements for the duration of the pregnancy – please ask your pharmacist and start as soon as possible. It is recommended to drink no alcohol.

If you are a smoker we strongly urge you (and your partner) to quit smoking as soon as possible– please see the nurse or health care assistant who would be delighted to support you.

Please make a routine GP appointment to ensure your dating scan can be requested and your basic medical history is reviewed.

Prior to your dating scan you will also need a Phlebotomy appointment for your first set of antenatal blood tests and your first(or ‘booking’) Midwife appointment (lasts approx. 1 hour).
